error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages

Hi,

I get this errors when trying to install SW using RPM:
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

I'm not a root in this account. Is this the problem? Do I have to be root?

Thanks.

Yes, you do have to be root to install an rpm, as a matter of fact any (most) software.

Hi, I have installed a vanilla 2.6.1 kernel on my RH 9 distribution. Then I applied the patches and upgraded to 2.6.7.
However, I m unable to install any apckage using rpm, whether root or user.

As a regular user I get the following errors :
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

and then, as aroot when i tried to install ANY rpm the following error is seen :
rpmdb: unable to join the environment
error: db4 error(11) from dbenv->open: Resource temporarily unavailable
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Resource temporarily unavailable (11)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

The wierd part is the packages are getting properly installed when I boot in the regular kernel (2.4.20-8) provided by RH9

Can I anyone help me?
