Question Dvd Authoring help

Ok, so im pretty much a complete newbie to linux and pretty much a noob to dvd authoring as well....so please bare with me, im sure its not as hard as i seem to be finding it.

My question is how can I convert avi video, to a format that can be burned to a dvd and played on a standalone dvd player? then how can i burn that Dvd and what programs do i need for both of these things?

if someone can take the time to explain it too me, id be greatly appreciative, remember i am almost a complete newbie to linux.

I would suggest either tovid or mandvd. If using tovid, you may want to get the GUI for it, although you can do the entire process from the command line. Mandvd does have a package for Mandriva 2006 and 2007 according to the apps main page.

Tovid - making a DVD with menu

Mandvd - KDE-Apps

EDIT - Sorry, forgot devede - DeVeDe

I use DeVeDe, It will convert just about any format to dvd( and many other formats ), and it uses a graphical interface! For ripping (and shrinking)DVD's I use k9copy-it works really well and again is a graphical interface--very easy to use--try them out I'm sure you will like them!
