DVD encoding and authoring

I know very litle about DVDs and have been searching for some simple howtos without success. I have several movie files, avi, mpg etc that I would like to be able to burn to DVD so they can be watched through a regular DVD player. I figured that loads of people must do this but assuming that people do manage ir, I cant find any idiots guides anywhere.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible and if so how?
