Talking Downloading a distro via modem?

Hey guys...

Its one of those oppinion posts. Well, you might like this.

First: I already have slackware linux installed.
I would like to try a new distro, and I was wondering, does any of you guys know a good distro to download using a modem and a rather not so bad connection. I already got both slackware 9.1 and slackware 10 via my connection, I would just like to know if any knows another distro I can get. Second thing...I dont have a CD-RW, which gives me a little bit of a problem download ISO images. Thirdly, I would really like to try an RPM based distro or a compile from source distro like gentoo, but their guide doesnt tell you the files you need to download to have: BASE + DEVEL + KERNEL + X + KDE. So, I would like it if someone knows a method by which I can get gentoo without downloading all the files in distfiles which are well over 10,000 files hehehehehe.

Well, thanks in advance.

My advice is to find yourself a friend with a broadband connection and a CD burner and buy him a case of beer.

Or you can use Bittorrent to download an ISO image from RPMfind.net's Bittorrent service:
http://rpmfind.net
Bittorrent can be found here:
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/
The reason I suggest it is because:
1. I feel your pain (I'm on 28K, and I've done a 600MB download with Bittorrent)
2. It can pause and resume downloads at any time, so it's an ideal tool. You'll have to be pretty patient, though .

Hi,
Well im on a dial-up modem too, a 56kb that is.
Im currently using Arch Linux 0.6, ive been using it since 0.5 was released (expected the release over a month) and im about to get 1 full year of using it.

Its one of the best i have tryed, and i did tryed a lot. (MDK, SuSE, Slack, Knoppix, Morphix, Damn Small...)

Its binary package management is one of the bests out there, although the pkgs it self some times are a little buggy (the price of cutting edge, though you can stay with stable instead of current if you dont like it), to make an upgrade to all your installed packages you just need to run one command: pacman -Syu, this means; sinchronize, refresh and upgrade. Also for installing other pkgs in the repos, just do pacman -S pkg-name and thats it, it will handle all the dependecies, download and install all you need.

Anyway, in my opinion, Arch is in its way to becaming one of the great distros out there.
Give it a try: www.archlinux.org
Updating the pkgs (if you want) daily, consumes less than 10mb of bandwidth --most of the times, except for big updates as X, browsers and such--.
