/dev/hdd input/output error...

I made backup cd's of all the mp3's i ripped on to my old Windows XP box. When i try to put them on my Linux box i get this error...

matrix@Linux-Powered:~/MP3$ cp /dev/hdd /home/matrix/MP3
cp: reading `/dev/hdd': Input/output error
matrix@Linux-Powered:~/MP3$

how can i get this to work, so i can create another music library on my box?

What exactly is hdd?
Hard-drive? CD-ROM?
And you really should mount it, rather than
trying to use a raw-device :)

You still need to use the mountpoint, then,
rather than the raw-device ...

cp /<your mnt>/<directory>/<cdrom>/* /<tareget>/<directory>

Tink

Just an advice: since I see you go by try and error (nothing wrong, we all do) I STRONGLY suggest you don't normally operate as root: you will likely damage your system soon or later. Also remember periodic backup of /home
