I've been hunting through the options in the 2.4.26 kernel configuration, and I came across the "Default RAM disk size" in "Block devices." I used make oldconfig to use whatever options were used in the default 2.4.22 kernel in Slack 9.1, so I didn't spend a lot of time going over every option. However, I see that this RAM disk size one is set to 7777, when the helpfile says it should be 4096 unless you have some special reason to change it. I'm just curious why the default slack kernel used 7777, and if I should leave it like this or change it back to 4096.

It depends how big your ram disk image is. You can change the size any time you want, but the kernel have to be setup do this. Mine is set at 32000. The ram disk is used as a temporaly root disk to load up certain modules that LINUX needs to boot up. Then it handles over to the hard drive for additional modules to be loaded.

Ok, thanks for the info, it sounds like I'm fine leaving it how it is since that was the default.

there are other reasons to, i use the ram disk for boot splash (and the default seems just right, maybe a bit bigger then what i need, but I'm lazy )

it really only depends on what you need it for (or if you need it at all)
