cygwin vim copy/paste problem

not sure I'm eligible to be asking questions here (cygwin?) but here goes anyway...

Am running vim from rxvt terminal (no Xwindow) in cygwin. Can paste *into* vim ok but cannot copy stuff from vim into other apps. Is this possible without running an Xwindows session?

Any help much appreciated!

How are you copying and pasting? Should be:
* highlight to copy
* middle-click or Shift-Ins to paste

Can paste ok (from clipboard/other apps) via Shift-Insert(or Middle-click), but highlighting text doesn't copy to the clipboard so's I can paste into external apps. The vim help mentions something about how anything that goes into the "* register is effectively copied to the clipboard but that doesn't seem to be working for me. Any suggestions?
