CVS 'hangs' - does nothing

hi, I'm trying to remove a module (called test) I made in my CVS repository on sourceforge, but whenever I use the following command it just sits there. I can type, but it doesn't even ask me for my password. I'm using shell.sourceforge.net with putty.

cvs -d :ext:myusername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/myproject remove test

I also tried setting the CVSROOT variable to

:ext:myusername@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/myproject

then I tried

cvs remove test

with the same results. Please help!
