could not start the XWindow server


hi all,

I have logged in the system by normal user.
while starting the Xwindow from the terminal,
its showing following error

cat: /home/sharad/.Xauthority: Permission denied

Gnome-ERROR **: Could not set mode 0700 on private per-user Gnome directory </home/sharad/.gnome_private> - aborting

Try changing the permissions on your .Xauthority, mine is 600, so try using
Code:
chmod 600 ~/.Xauthority
and see if it works.

you need to
su root
or login as root to start x windows, couldnt really tell u why, just a security method I guess

generally it's considered a bad practice to log in as root, since you can easily do something stupid, and all applications run as root have full access to everything. Logging in as root also sort of nullifies the entire permission system. Just make sure you have the right permissions set on the .Xauthority file and all others you may need.
