Connecting to the web via proxy

Hi!, I am trying to connect to a proxy server so I can get out and download files from the internet via Wget. I do not have a GUI and the OS is Red Hat ES. Can some one let me know how I can define the proxy settings such as 192.168.2.32:80 for a proxy server so I can connect to it. I believe it is a file but I don't know where it is. I checked /etc/sysconfig/network/networking-scripts for a clue but no luck. I remember someone telling me I can simply define an env variable such as http_proxy=192.168.2.32:80 and export it but I am not sure.

Thanks.

yeah you're right. just use http_proxy. either use a line like "export http_proxy=..." in your .bashrc or just run wget directly with the variable before it.. "http_proxy=... wget google.com"

Thanks acid_kewpie I just wanted to confirm the correct way of defining proxy settings. Is there a config file for this without directly modifying the .bashrc?

no, there's no ideal place, but your own .bashrc is ideal for it. alternatively ~/.profile or /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc also suitable depending on the scale you wish the variable to be applied at.
