Compiling MPlayer 32bit on Fedora 4 64bit

I've successfully been able to compile MPlayer as a 64bit application, but I'm having some trouble creating a 32bit one.

This is the command line I'm using to try to configure it:

./configure --enable-gui --cc="gcc32 -m32" --as="as --32" --target=athlon_xp --with-extralibdir=/usr/lib

At first it compained that I didn't have X11 support, so I installed the X11 development packages by doing this:

yum install xorg-x11-devel*

Now I'm having a problem with libpng. Thinking that libpng wasn't installed, I saw that yum had some packages available so I:

yum install libpng* (or something close to that, can't remember 100%)

So here is my configure output now:

Code:
[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7]# ./configure --enable-gui --cc="gcc32 -m32" --as="as --32" --target=athlon_xp --with-extralibdir=/usr/lib

Error: PNG support required for GUI compilation, please install libpng and libpng-dev packages.

Check "configure.log" if you do not understand why it failed.
[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7]#
Here is what is in configure.log about libpng:

Code:
============ Checking for PNG support ============

#include <png.h>
#include <string.h>
int main(void) {
  printf("png.h : %s\n", PNG_LIBPNG_VER_STRING);
  printf("libpng: %s\n", png_libpng_ver);
  return (strcmp(PNG_LIBPNG_VER_STRING, png_libpng_ver));
}

gcc32 -m32    -L/usr/lib /tmp/mplayer-conf-28919-11005.c -o /tmp/mplayer-conf-1$
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib64/libpng.so when searching for -lpng
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib64/libpng.a when searching for -lpng

ldd /tmp/mplayer-conf-10475-11005.o
ldd: /tmp/mplayer-conf-10475-11005.o: No such file or directory

Result is: no
##########################################
And finally, I think I do have 32-bit libpng installed:

Code:
[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7]# ls /usr/lib/libpng*
/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0        /usr/lib/libpng.so.2.1.0.18
/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0.1.2.8  /usr/lib/libpng.so.3
/usr/lib/libpng.so.2          /usr/lib/libpng.so.3.1.2.8
[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7]#
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've gotten past that step. I compared my Fedora setup to what I have on my 32-bit Mandrake system.

It looks like MPlayer needed a libpng.so file in the /usr/lib directory. On my Mandrake system it was just a link to another file.

So I did the following: ln libpng.so.3.1.2.8 libpng.so

There were a couple more files dealign with gtk like that too that I had to make links for. I'm not really sure if this is the best course of action though. I'm worried that there are more files that need this for the libpng stuff, besides just the one, and I'm just making a mess.

Anyways, I can get configure to complete, but now make fails:

I think you need to enable cross-compile with --enable-cross-compile or some junk like that. Would be interesting to see if anyone has got this working. I would like to know how to work on mplayer development on 64 bit Fedora myself. With wine it was easy. Just run a script provided on the winehq site for fedora which basically just creates additional links of all the libraries to a common location (/usr/local/lib). After running this script I notice a lot of apps compile 32 bit with no problems. So give it a try.

Code:
$ cat install/ldconfig32.bin
#! /bin/bash

# Create symlinks for libraries in TARGET_DIR for which there is
# no *.so link for the linker. Make links to the shortest name - they
# are less likely to change on update. Preserve local libraries.

: ${TARGET_DIR=/usr/local/lib}

# Clean up old links
for lib in $TARGET_DIR/lib*.so; do
        test -L $lib || continue
        link=$(readlink $lib)
        case $link in
                /lib/*.so.*) rm -f $lib ;;
                /usr/lib/*.so.*) rm -f $lib ;;
                /usr/X11R6/lib/*.so.*) rm -f $lib ;;
        esac
done

# Make new links
for lib in /usr/lib/lib*.so.* /lib/lib*.so.* /usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*; do
        solib=${lib%.so*}.so

        # Linker already looks in /usr/lib
        test -e /usr/lib/${solib##*/} && continue

        solibmin=$(ls ${solib}.* | sort | head -1)
        test $lib != $solibmin && continue
        target=$TARGET_DIR/${solib##*/}

        # Never overwrite non-symlinks
        if test -e $target -a ! -L $target; then
                echo "Preserving $target - not a symlink"
                continue
        fi
        echo "Linking $solibmin"
        ln -nsf $solibmin $target
done
That said, I've just been reminded that yumex can be run with the --forcei386 option and you can use it to update your mis-matched 32 bit libs as well as installing 32 bit mplayer, plug-in and firefox. I tried it, along with the greasemonky cnn friendly video script and now I can watch cnn videos on my FC64. Yay and also boo to cnn for using proprietary 32bit codecs for which no 64 bit counterpart is available.
