Compiling errors

Hello!

I sometimes try to compile binaries from source. I follow the instructions religiously from the INSTALL file, but I always get some kind of error during compilation.

I was compiling VCOP and I get a syntax error in main()

I tried to compile the gnome libraries and I get a sgml file not found error.

They are always fatal errors and they exit the system. Errors [1] and p2[

What am I doing wrong?

Maybe you don't do anything wrong, but the program you're trying to compile depends on some other one, that you do not have. I'd say 99% of those errors are from either missing features or different versions (between your system and the author's).
Your post lacks detail to better tell what your problem is.
Try searching for the error message you're getting on Google.
