compiling errors

I have been tearing my hair out trying to get rid of this Media tray empty error that I get. I have found a few files that contain the error and I am trying to affect the code so it fixes the problem, but I don't know c and when I go to compile the file usb.c I get:

usb.c:40:25: cups/string.h: No such file or directory
usb.c: In function `main':
usb.c:245: `status' undeclared (first use in this function)
usb.c:245: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
usb.c:245: for each function it appears in.)

I haven't changed the file yet I just wanted to see if I could compile it and I typed
gcc -o usb usb.c

when I tried to compile. Same error in emacs.

any thoughts/

As it is not finding the header file cups/string.h this would suggest that you don't have the CUPS development packages installed. This package's exact name will depend on your distribution however is probably cups-devel-something. Istalling this should provide the header files you need.
