Common Desktop Environment - question

There are three main desktop environments availible for Linux:

KDE, Gnome and XFce. (Not talking about window managers like E17)

From what I've read there is what is called CDE is widely used at UNIX workstations - and it is some kind of standard for UNIX desktop.

There is commercial version of CDE is availible for Linux...

The questions:
  • Is there any open source or freeware CDE availible? To give it a try.
  • What are the advantages of CDE over OS desktops?
  • Is it really so "Common" Desktop Environment on UNIX platforms?

Thanks

CDE is not so common anymore, you mainly get it on the commercial UNIX's ( at least where they can't get KDE or Gnome on ) like Solaris. It uses the motif toolkit. I haven't seen it running for a long time but its pretty antquated now compared to whats available for Linux.

Its was called common because it worked on more than one UNIX. Anytime you run a pure X app, thats basically what CDE looks like.

Heres a few snapshots CDE Pics but they are from 1999
