command line email with attachments???

basically i need to send an email over the intranet to our mail server that will forward it on to the internet. i am creating pdf report on the fly and sending them out to the reciepiants. this needs to be automated. thus i'm looking at a command line email client that will send attachments. i also need to keep as many ports closed as possible. do i need to have an MTA like sendmail, qmail on my server? what clients do you think would be good for this purpose?

You will want an mta, but don't accept any smtp connections. If you're using a packeage-based distribution you can use sendmail/postfix easily. If you want to setup qmail then you should have a look at lifewithqmail.org

Short and sweet for the subject...
mail -s <subject> -a <attchment> user@domain
