Talking old command line email trick

Greetings all

I faintly remember a trick i used to pull on friends a couple of years back. I don't remember ding about it but using it:
I could send email to friends using any name. I mean, when friends saw my mail they would see
From: nonexistingname@nonexistingname.com

Get it! It was pretty cool. All I had to mention was the recipients mail address and the body of the message and by some means provide a fictitious email address.

I think it has something to with Daemons. But...

Doing this depends on the receiving server. Some servers use authentication which rejects messages from nonexistent domains, so this is something to keep in mind.

Yes, thanks.

Well, I was talking about here in India, where dialup is still very much popular and a couple of years aga, was the only thing available.

But I just wanted to learn the trick again as I had completely forgotten it.
