That error usually means your attempting to run a program in X while logged in as someone else. Who are you running the program specifcally as and who are you logged in thru X as?

if you want to anyway you can allow root to open windows by running
xhost + localhost
as the user you logged in.

Logged into X? If you have a graphical user interface running, that means X is running.

you can simply remenber the name you typed in at the gdm / kdm
login prompt or you open a terminal and ask it

whoami

you tried to start cinelerra within a graphical envirement right ?
if not you have to do so.
