Capturing X Events

I'm working on an arcade machine to raise money for my robotics team, and I've got the coin acceptor hooked up to send the letter A on every coin insertion. What I'd like to do is write a program that does certain things everytime the letter A is pressed, regardless of which program has focus in X. I suppose the easiest way would be to monitor X events, but if anyone has information on monitoring raw keystrokes, I'm game to do that.
