Burning MP3 files with mkisofs and cdrecord

I have downloaded MP3 files from this particular site before; and burned them with Real Player -in XP; but using mkisofs, and cdrecord, I am getting negative results.

I downloaded fresh MP3 files; changed their original names to numeric; and stored them in burn2/

edhe@hebrews:~/burn2$ file 70*
70201: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
70202: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
70203: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
70204: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
702051: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
702052: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
70206: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag
70207: MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag

I CREATED "Test.iso"

edhe@hebrews:~$ sudo mkisofs -R -o Test.iso burn2/
Password:
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
Unknown file type (unallocated) burn2/.. - ignoring and continuing.

What does "Unknown file type (unallocated) burn2/.." mean?

I MOUNTED "Test.iso" TO LOOK AT IT.

sudo mount -o loop,ro Test.iso /mnt/burning
edhe@hebrews:~$ sudo mount -o loop,ro Test.iso /mnt/burning
edhe@hebrews:~$ cd /mnt/burning/
edhe@hebrews:/mnt/burning$ ls
70201 70202 70203 70204 702051 702052 70206 70207

I burned the CD image:

edhe@hebrews:~$ cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=0,4,0 Test.iso

I CHECKED THE BURNED CD:

edhe@hebrews:/cdrom$ ls
70201 70202 70203 70204 702051 702052 70206 70207

I TRIED PLAYING IT WITH MY MP3 PLAYER, AND IT SAYS "NO DISC"

With an MP3 disc that I recorded in XP I noted:
edhe@hebrews:~$ mount /cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hda is write-protected, mounting read-only
edhe@hebrews:~$ cd /cdrom
edhe@hebrews:/cdrom$ ls

Is it because that "Test.iso" does not look like the above CD that it won't play ("No Disc")?; and if so, how do I modify the mkisofs commands?

I'm not 100% sure I follow you. Are you trying to create a cd full of .mp3 files for use with an mp3-capable cd player? You should only need to burn a standard iso9660 data disk with the files on it then, right?

It sounds like it's simply not reading the file structure correctly. Perhaps your player needs the Joliet extensions enabled. I don't really know how to use mkisofs or cdrecord directly, but it doesn't look like you have it specified to me. Scanning the mkisofs man file, I think you need to specify '-joliet-long' in the command line. This is just a guess though.

BTW, is there any special reason you're using the cli tools directly? Why not use one of the gui frontends like k3b, gnomebaker or xcdroast?
