Burn time onto a video?

I have a portable device that plays videos but it doesn't remember where I left off or show how far through I am.

I currently use ffmpeg to encode the videos into a small format that the device can play.

I want to burn the time onto the video (in a corner preferably) so I can see where I am in the video and easily return (fast-forward) to that time later.

Can ffmpeg do this? Or another encoder? Preferably not a GUI.

Thanks

I haven't done this myself. I'm just the messenger passing along info

I came across two pages that seem to imply that you'll need to create a second video (presumably the time display) and then overlay it on the original video. Again, I haven't done it myself, but it seems like a reasonable approach and I did see one or two pages where someone said, flat-out, that ffmpeg cannot burn a time onto a video itself.

The pages I found:
ffmpeg overlay time offset
simple overlay and logo
