every time i try and burn a cd , i get this error

Did you try a different program? Maybe it's just Brasero.
Also, look into using cdrecord to burn your cd's. (Link here.)

And next time, please post long terminal outputs in code brackets like

every program ive tried for burning stops, once it actually gets to the burn. i have a list of errors from each one. at one point my drive wasnt even playing data cd's just music. now it plays but doesnt burn.

Do you have another burner you can install and try? It sounds like a hardware issue.

Also, did you try burning the CD as the root user? That might work too.

Try using cdrecord. Wodim is known to have lots of bugs and causes lots of trouble burning CD's/DVD's.

i get the an error with cd record too, that is what my default is set to.
what are the chances that it just wont burn. is it possible that the drive is just a pos?
it is from an emachine and is installed on my dell xps400

What does dmesg say after your other errors?

How old is your media? Some black media degrades with age and UV exposure. Which makes them unburnable. You should keep your blanks in a dark place. And don't buy them from the store if they're exposed to direct sunlight. They could have been sitting there six months IN THE SUN before you bought them.
