brand new install

redhat 8.0, on a 6 gig HD, PII 233, 256M ram. on the boot, everything seems to load fine until it tries to load the GUI. the screen flickers a few times, i even see the mouse cursor for a second or two, then i end up back at the text login screen. at startx, the hard drive hustles for bit, the screen goes black, then i get:

...
(==) Log file: "var/log/XFree86.0.log",...
(==) Using config file: "etc/x11/XF86Config"

Fatal Server error:

_LoaderFileToMem() read() failed: Input/output error

help!

What is your video card?

Are you sure you can run RH 8.0 using a GUI on a p2 233?

Well the ram seems capable......but yeh back to your problem, whats your video card?

Have a look at the log file and post the error here (the error will be near the end of the file-don't post the entire file).

the video card is S3 trio64V+. it was detected on the (i used the graphical) install; it said "S3 Trio64V+ (generic)" driver. there were a couple of other S3 Trio64 drivers in the list. the system requirements say pentium class CPU, with 200mHz recommended.

and i thought i *had* posted the error message. the log file said exactly what the original error said.

Have you looked at "var/log/XFree86.0.log" yet?

during the install, when i set my video card (S3 Trio64V+) and monitor (gateway EV700), then TEST the setting, i get the GUI screen with the "testing 800x600 at 16 bits per pixel....can you read this message" box in the middle. whether i click yes, no, or let it timeout, the screen switches to an error message from my *monitor* saying "out of frequency." the HF is 28.1kHz, the minimum operating frequency is 30kHz. how can the entire *graphical* install work perfectly up until this point, and then konk out? of course, if i skip the "test" phase and complete the installation, when i boot up, i get the original problem listed above.

ps. the log contains the same error message i listed above.
