Battery not displaying correctly in KDE3

Hi guys!
I am using KDE 3 with Mandrake 9.2.
For some reason, the battery indicator in KDE is not working. It just sits there blank saying there is no battery inserted. I can take the battery out and in again and nothing happens.
Does anyone knows how can I solve this problem? It would be nice if I could know when my battery is almost up so I can plug it into the AC.

Any suggestions.
I have a Sony VAIO NV-200 laptop.

Check to see if /proc/acpi exists. If not, you probably need to recompile the kernel to support acpi. I had to do that with RedHat on my HP laptop.

Looks like acpi is not in the proc folder.
How would I recompile the kernel to be able to add that capability?

Thanks so much in advance,
Teo

Grab one of the many Kernel HOWTOs off Google, download the latest stable kernel from kernel.org and follow the instructions. Don't get frustrated if it takes a couple tries. It is worth the effort.
