Audio Quality root/user

Im having a odd issue, whenever i launch programs such as skype or xmms or amarok as root, i get pefect quality audio playback, but when i launch these programs as a normal user they are distorted, static-ridden and skype dosnt even play the test call. is there a solution to this? thanks for the help!
