Audacity, no record using xandros(debianI think)

Using Xandros ( i think its Debian). Have installed Audacity ( which appears to be very popular). The program appears to be running OK, I can get input from the rear mic in, but not from the live mic in. If I enter preferences, I can't exit without the program reporting 'invalid playback device'. Therefore, no preferences can be changed in any way. It appears to me that Xandros has named the record and playback devices differently to what Audacity expects, unfortunately for me, I have no idea how to find this information.
