As ntop is now useless, what are the alternatives?

The latest incarnation of ntop, the GPLv3-licensed "ntopng", depends on a closed-source, commercially licensed component ("nProbe") to actually collect data from the network.

Are there any good alternatives out there?

(Or perhaps someone would be interested in forking ntop/ntopng?)

Try http://www.tecmint.com/command-line-...ux-performance and look at iptraf, nethogs, iftop.
Collectl can monitor/check almost anything OS http://collectl.sourceforge.net/

None of those programs are remotely similar to ntop.

ntop passively collects and analyses network traffic and presents host and protocol statistics via a web interface.

That is a huge bummer.

These are not close to NTOP, but each serves a good function.

I currently use observium at work, and darkstat at home ony a mirror-port OpenBSD NA box.

Hi there,
I'm successfully using:
softflowd as probe
nfcapd to save flows as files
nfdump for human readable analysis
nfsen for graphical analysis
All free software.
This setup also supports IPv6 traffic.
Cheers!
