Architectures for rpm DLs, do they matter?


ive been downlaoding rpm files and wine.rpms etc and i was wondering if it mattered what kind of file it was that im download?
when it sais i386 or i686 what does that mean?
my distro is for i386 but i have a i686
does it matter which kind of file i downlaod?

I have an amd2100+ what is that, 686?
if so then should i install only rpms for i686?

hi
386 is ur processor archit

max machines now are of 686 archit but the packages are released asof to support max. types of architec

so a i386 package will work on 386 and 686
while 686 package weill work on 686 only

Files in RPM are compiled [with Optimization flags] for a given architecture.

to ad on to that

for a given architecture and for a given environment compirsing of the kernel .OS ,compiler etc etc
