Architectures for rpm DLs, do they matter?

ive been downlaoding rpm files and wine.rpms etc and i was wondering if it mattered what kind of file it was that im download?
when it sais i386 or i686 what does that mean?
my distro is for i386 but i have a i686
does it matter which kind of file i downlaod?

I have an amd2100+ what is that, 686?
if so then should i install only rpms for i686?

386 is ur processor archit

max machines now are of 686 archit but the packages are released asof to support max. types of architec

so a i386 package will work on 386 and 686
while 686 package weill work on 686 only
