applications using a file


Hi,

How to find the applications associated with a particlular file which is opened ie . how to
which applications are using file .

Your post isn't very clear, at least to me. Do you mean how to find the files associated with a particular program?

Don't get what you mean by "applications associated with a particular file which is opened".

Have a look at the man page for lsof - is that what you want?

Is there anyway I can come to know whether the
file is opened for write or read operation ?

Yes, there's more info in the man page in the OUTPUT section. Basically, the file descriptor (FD) is followed by a letter that designates the mode used for opening. The modes are r for read access, w for write access, u for read/write access and - for unknown.
