Adding new applications to "Applications" menu

i am using fedora core 3 with gnome desktop. In gnome, the panel has an "Applications" button, serving the same purpose of the "Start" menu in MS Windows. My problem is how to add newly installed applications (i've just downloaded and installed OpenOffice) into the Application menu? Unlike Windows, drag and drop doesnt work.

Open Office should have installed into the Applications menu under the Office heading. Is this where it is? Anyway, there is a way to edit the Applications menu but it isn't as simple as drag and drop and it has some limitations I'm afraid. I have seen several posts on various forums asking how to do it and up to now I haven't taken the time to post a How-To on it, but I will work on it tonight and should have one by tomorrow.
