Alsa sound dsp problem

Hey,
I just installed Debian, and I'm having a problem with sound. I have alsa, and certain things work, but others dont. XMMS works, I can play anything through XMMS, and aplay works. But I cant get hardly anything else to work, even if I specify alsa as the sound in them. MPlayer wont work, nor will most of my games. I noticed that in /dev, I had some dsp's, but they said no such device, so I deleted them and tried to recreated them with MAKEDEV, but it said it couldn't create the device. Most things try to access the /dev/dsp's I believe... so how do I get alsa to use the /dev's?

Thanks,
Marshall

I used 'MAKEDEV audio' and it recreated all the audio devices... but none of them work. They used to work on my old slackware install. And I know my sound/alsa works, atleast partially, because XMMS works.
