have you set permissions correctly?
"ls -l /dev/dsp" it should be writeable for group audio and you'll have to be in group audio.

"chgrp audio /dev/dsp"
"chmod g+rw /dev/dsp"
"adduser <login_name> audio"

as root.
man is your friend...

Thumbs up solution for "oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission denied"

oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission denied

@mricth
yes technically the solution by adding the user.acc to audio group
even i've add that... i still can't hear the sound...

of course if someone login with root.acc he can hear the sound
because

----snip-----
chika:/etc $ ls -la |grep dsp
....
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 2009-05-06 02:40 dsp
....
----snip-----

just do this

chika:/etc $ sudo chmod o+rw dsp
....
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 14, 3 2009-05-06 02:40 dsp
....

xmms or other audio player should work
