Where are filesystems mounted during the boot process

I've been trying to figure out exactly where in the boot process filesystems are mounted and what it is that actaully starts the process. I don't see anything in /etc/init.d/ or /etc/inittab that does it for all filesystems. Can someone point me in the right direction.

The boot process has well and truly finished by the time the init scripts (or analogue) run.
Short answer is that the boot loaders don't mount anything - have a read of this wikipedia article on the boot cycle.
Post back in need.

fstab

After loading the kernel, the init process starts. It uses the /etc/fstab file to mount static partitions, as udev manages automount devices like usb. Look at the fstab man. Also systemd only uses fstab to generate its own entries.

Thanks for the reply. So it is all internal to init? I looked at the fstab on my system and did not find anything specifically mentioning what does the mount at system start-up.
