Web Hosting Question - Bad idea?

I am going to try to make the best sense of this I can.

I have a domain (myhost.com) and 2 name servers (ns1 and ns2.myhost.com) on a reseller account. I am moving to a dedicated and I have been playing with OpenVZ and decided I want to create a virtual server for the main hosting accounts.

My question is, the hostname for the main server is server1.myhost.com and I plan to move that domain over to the dedicated. Can I get away with only using the IP for the main server and then having that domain be on a openvz (shared1.myhost.com) container or does the main server and also the container have to be on qualified domain names?

Also, I planed to register two new name servers ns-a and ns-b and use .38 and .39 and then run the virtual accounts off a setup on .38.

Any big things that are not going to work? I know its really vague but I hope I explained it the best.

Basically, I have a dedicated server (server.myhost.com) and a virtual container (shared.myhost.com) and wnat to know the best way to set it up so I can have shared accounts on the container and minimal settings on the dedicated.

You could have your main IP:80 go to the VM server if that is going to be your customer hosting and IP:8080 to the dedicated server? Course not sure if I understand you all the way.

Thanks for the response. I know i'm not being clear. It's more if a DNS and name server thing.

My main box is bigbox.myhost.Com and .35

The VM is share.myhost.com and .38

I registered two name servers on .38 and .39

Can I configure bind on just the main box to handle all hosting and non hosing requests so I can get to all my servers by name?

as long as they are public facing dns servers for the outside world then yes. It would act as if they were internal and your vm would act just as if it was another physical machine. I just want to clarify my understanding. You have two server that are dns server and one physical server with a vm both of which will be hosting sites? Is that correct? If so then just redirect way www.mainsite.com to physical ip and www.hostedsite1.com to vm's ip. Again both of those ip's should be outside unless you are using a PAT(Port address translation) then things might get a little more difficult.

Ok. I just am trying to set it up the best way. Here is what I have setup now and what I want to do and see how it should be setup.

I have a reseller account with the main domain on it as myhost.com and the name servers registered as ns1.myhost.com and ns2.myhost.com

I recently bought a dedicataed server now assigned the name box.myhost.com and ip .35.

I have registered the ips .38 and .39 to ns-a.myhost.com and ns-b.myhost.com for the name servers.

My first road block is the best way to setup the DNS. Does it need to be on the main server or can the virtual server handle it. I am not really big on having the host server resolve, just more concerned with the shared accounts.

Second, if I change the myhost.com domain name name servers to point to the new name servers, will it just move when they propagate or will I cause problems for the other accounts on the reseller?

Third, can I use a name serer IP for the shared accounts? The name servers are .38 and .39 and the virutal server is .38 and has the .39 associated with it. Is this OK?

Ok I see. Yes you can host the dns on a virtual server. and switching over from one dns to another normally only hurts for a day or so until replication of dns happens throughout the world. I think it will move right then but everyone else may have a cache of your old stuff. Best way to handle that is set your ttl to something like an hour. Just make sure you secure your dns or people will be able to replicate your dns with there's thus causing security issues.

Yes for your third question.
