VNC Viewer Question

Hi,

I have installed VNC server onto a Oracle Linux server and when I connect, all I get is a viewer showing the 'terminal' command window and not the actual desktop.

Any ideas as to where I went wrong?

Thanks

First mistake is you installed VNC! Get rid of it, and use a decent service liek NX from mnomachine.org instead.

Your second mistake though, is probably that you have no ~/.vnc/xstartup file to load a desktop environment for you.

thanks for your reply, I have no choice with VNC (business policy)

I can view desktop environment via VMware console, so not sure why displaying command terminal via VNC?

Thanks

VNC creates a brand new X instance upon which to run programs by default. There are ways to use the VNC protocol to see the existing desktop but it's not the default model in use.

In general desktop sharing with VNC is generally just done within the DE now, and the old skool config files that the normal vnc server woudl use are uncommon. Check this document whcih shoudl apply to OEL6 too... http://www.techotopia.com/index.php/...ntOS_6_Desktop
