Facing the login problem.

i try to login to the system by the normal user. But when i logged in with the correct username and password, it takes me to the blank (black screen) screen instead of the command line prompt. Only the cursor is blinking ...

Please help me out what is the issue. ? I am using redhat 4

Putting the old version of RHEL you're using to one side - is this happening when you login on the console directly or only when you do network logins using putty etc.? Can you login to the system at all? Is it still running fine for user apps?

Maybe there is an issue with X Windows on this system? Have you tried typing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace when you see the blank screen?

If you can't get on at all you might want to boot into single user mode (in GRUB append the end of your boot string with the word single) and have a look at your logfiles.
