...which will only tell the OP the name/path of the ftp CLIENT, not the server...
And I think the path will surely let me know whether ftp is installed from rpms or tar file.

sree.m, if you are not paying for RedHat, YOU SHOULD NOT BE USING IT. You can 'work around' a repository issue and get things working, but you are then ignoring the fact that you won't get bugfixes, security updates/patches, kernel updates, etc., etc....ANYTHING that you'll need to keep a server running long term. Load CentOS instead, and you'll have a system that's 99.x% identical to RHEL, but have access to everything, including yum. You can just put your installation DVD in, and search for the vsftpd package, and install it with "rpm -i <package name>", then check Google for one of MANY tutorials on how to configure it.
So I think you should request the moderators to remove the forum for RED HAT as according to you all the guys using RHEL should contact the support and not LQ?
according to your post none of the RHEL users should ask for help here as they are already paying for it. One using RHEL does not has the rights to learn any thing?
I don't get the point, instead of giving an answer to the solution or helping at the first priority you are sending people for support. That shpuld be the last option according to me even if someone is paying for support and he is comeing here for help then what are we suppose to do?
Ask him to change the distro?
I agree with your point that the OP won't get regular updates and bugs but I think he should be aware of the fact if he is using it and what if its being used as test distro. I am using RHEL without RHN support and I have not yet faced any bugs.
RHEL also supports our Oracle apps and not CentOs so it is preferred as we don't need to run any servers on it.
So finally I am goin to request on your behalf to remove the RHEL forum from this blog

Nope, not true at all. How, exactly, is the path to an executable going to tell the user if it's from RPM or source?? If the source build puts the installation path in the same location, you'll see no difference. And again, the OP is looking for an FTP SERVER, not a client, so even IF they identify whether the FTP package is installed via RPM or source...they are STILL going to be missing the server.

First and foremost, do not EVER request ANYTHING on my behalf. You do not speak for me now, or will you ever, do you understand that? Second, I DID answer the OP's question, which was directing them to set up the local DVD as a repository, or installing the RPM manually (and I even provided the command to do so).
