I installed SPAM Assassin on my machine and so far I haven't been able to make it work. Here are a few lines of the log file:

I used netstat -pnat and I can see that the port 783 is there but no program is associated with it? Also, I tried to telnet 127.0.0.1 783 but I got: "connection was closed by foreign host".

Any ideas? I'm using Ubuntu 8.10

Mind that this is spampd that crashes, not spamd (the spamassassin daemon).
You can find more info here and here, but from what I've read, it seems that there is no need to run spamd together with spampd. All the job is done by spampd that uses spamassassin (not spamd) to tag a message.
