sendmail and name resolution

Hello all,

I searched the forums for a bit but have not found a solution to my problem yet. I apologize if it is a cross post.

Note: Domain1.com and Domain2.com are actual domains, but have been renamed for security.

I have a server hosting a php page that uses a webform to send an email. The email gets sent to both a hard coded address, user@domain1.com, and a user specified email, user@domain2.com.

When the form goes through, sendmail sends the email to the user specified email, but cannot send it to the hard coded email because it cannot resolve it.

from maillog:

Code:
Jun 18 10:11:05 localhost sendmail[24384]: n5IEAPNT024382: to=<user@domain1.com>, ctladdr=<user@domain2.com> (48/48), delay=00:00:40, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=152830, relay=domain1.com, dsn=5.1.2, stat=Host unknown (Name server: domain1.com: no data known)
I ran host at one point before trying the php page:

Code:
# host domain1.com
 domain1.com mail is handled by 10 mail.domain1.com.

Then after running the Php page which now returns nothing:
Code:
# host domain1.com
#
Ping nor nslookup can resolve domain1.com either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: This has since been resolved.

Good call. I was so relived it started working, I didn't even think about it. My apologies.

While I am not sure what exactly fixed it, I did two(three?) things.

First, I found out the DNS servers it was pointed to, where not the correct ones. This solved the resolution issues.

Then, I went back and removed the "define(`SMART_HOST', " in my sendmail.mc file that I placed in their earlier as part of a previous troubleshooting step. I also changed one of the "MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(" directives back to default.

After this, everything now resolves correctly. The DNS servers it was pointed to, I have problems with in the past on other non-server based machines. Since I am not an admin of those DNS servers, I was trying to figure out a way to deal with it on my end. I feel that switching to the correct DNS servers for the hosted environment was the actual fix, and that my setting my sendmail.mc file back to default corrected problems that I introduced.

being new to sendmail and not having dealt with mail servers much before, it was sure enough a learning experience.

It figures after fighting with it for a week, I post on a forum and soon after the solution bites me in the face. :-/

I hope this helps.
