Send email from Suse linux 10 SP2 without having a mail server
Hi,
Our mail server is down due to some reasons. We would like to send mails fro linux server to employees without the mail server. Kindly suggest me if there is any way to send emails.
Nobody here can tell you because you provide no useful information.
We do not know if your "down" mail server is a relay server from your environment, or is the mail server where your employees have their mailboxes/retrieve their mail from.
If it's the first case then set your linux server to directly deliver mail rather than through the relay, although if your network is set up to use a relay server then you may need firewall rules changed to allow outbound access.
If it's the first case then you won't be able to send mails until whoever is responsible for your e-mail provision provides a replacement mail server.
Thank you all for the reply.
Please be noted that our SUSE contract has been ended and we are planning to move to RHEL until then we would prefer to use SUSE only. Is there any way to send mails from it?
Also am not so sure about mail server concepts and its configuration. Please help.
Hi,
Thank you all for the reply. Please be noted that our SUSE contract has been ended and we are planning to move to RHEL until then we would prefer to use SUSE only.
So call SuSE and open a single-case support call, and pay for it. And you do realize that you will also have to pay for RHEL, right?

Your question makes absolutely ZERO sense...if you want to send emails, you very obviously need an email server, somewhere. You can install postfix or sendmail, but if you know NOTHING about email, this will be a VERY difficult process for you.
Best suggestion would be to hire someone locally who can do this for you.

I guess we'd need to know how the emails reside on this linux server. If they are in some format you may be able to simply make a cron job to send them to users. Guess we'd also need to know how this lan or wan is configured.
yast is your friend.
Best way is to define "smart SMTP" server which will do rest work,
otherwise you have chance that most mail servers will drop your messages,
because you are not in white lists.
But it is possible to configure as standalone server.
