Question Queries about bind...

Hi
I have first time setup BIND as my primary nameserver in a office. It is working very well.
Now I have three questions?
Q 1. When I ping the another client from my windows pc i have to write down FQDN name rather then only hostname where as if i ping from another Unix machine such that solaries or Linux i have to only type hostname and rest of domain name automatically resolve. So my question is is it any provision in windows if i only type hostname rather then fqdn my name server resolves it query same like in Linux / Unix machines.
Q 2.If i ping from any machine eg Linux /windows it shows me this screen :
Pinging debian.cheemas.com.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa [192.168.0.5] with 32 bytes of
data:

Reply from 192.168.0.5: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.5: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.5: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

how do i remove .0.168.192.in-addr.arpa I want rather then it shows me .0.168.192.in-addr.arpa resolved name should end with <machine name>.<domain name>.com is it possible in BIND server what are the procedure?

Q 2. At this time i have to manually make entry of host names in Bind zone files is this any provision that host name entry will add automatically in zones files rather then creating manually.

Thanks
Charanjit Singh

  1. Add it to your hosts file, usually in : C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  2. What you are describing is called Reverse DNS. You will need to contact your ISP for that to be changed.
