Sounds like sgrlscz has it. The UID 500 has been locked out with bad password attempts. It might not matter if you delete and recreate as UID 500 has been blocked by pam_tally2. You need to reset this block with the following command when the UID of the user is 500.

Note: My assumption that pam_tally2 might be storing the UID rather than the loginname is (as most assumptions are) purely speculation ..
