Need suggestions/ideas on how to troubleshoot/fix vpn server issue

Hello,

I recently got a new VPS (CentOS) (1&1), and although it seems to work very well, from time to time, and in an inconsistent manner, it starts having extremely slow response time.

All of a sudden, but several times a day, pages seem to be taking forever to load (white screen, it seems the initial request doesn't go through). Also, the FTP returns a connection failed, and trying to connect through SSH seems taking forever as well.

I have sent the technical support many tickets, and I have performed many MTR and other traceroute software. There are many lost packets along the way from time to time, but the technical support answered me that it shouldn't be an issue.

While in SSH session, everything seems to be fine, and the load average is around 0.1. There's no traffic or CPU usage (which I have never seen above 1%) that would explain these sudden issues.

After these period with no response at all from the server, things get back to normal, and the website and server start having very good response times again.

The technical support told me it's a problem on my VPS, not a problem on the hardware node, but it seems that everything is fine on the VPS. I have nothing out of the ordinary in the logs either.

Any idea what's going on, and suggestions on how I could fix the issue or what to ask the technical support.

Thanks,

I should mention that I have seen at several times more than 50% packet loss on several hostnames in the mtr.

My website has very low traffic, and virtually no impact on the server.

Thanks for your help,

Sorry, I wrote in the subject VPN, but what I'm talking about really is "VPS" (Virtual Private Server).
