I really need help. I have been trying to create CGI scripts for a default directory to my website. Basically, I have a Linux based web hosting site, created a domain name and my page reads 'directory has no index file.' The hosting site doesn't provide that type of support. I have tried the basic files cgi, pl, and py and the best that I have accomplished is displaying the output online, but not creating the default file. I am missing something but I don't know what.

I am a newbie to server side programming, as in three days newbie. I have tried every softwhere-side trick I can think of to do this, including using a remote ftp to try create a shell scripts. That did not work. I can't figure out how to chmod on the SSL layer in linux.

I don't understand how this works. Can someone please provide some help with the code I would need to use to make this work?

There are a full list of modules available on the server. I just don't know how to use them. Everything I have been finding on the internet are the files to download Perl which I can't use. I just need to code to write to my /cgi-bin/ to make my site work.

CGI scripts will not run in the default directory (unless configured that way...UNSAFE). Generally the server looks for index.html in the default directory. You can call the CGI from your index.html. CGI scripts also need to be enabled in the apache config file.

I figured that out the hard way. When no one was answering the question, I was frustrated and realized I was thinking about it incorrectly. I went in and looked at my error logs and found what I did wrong. It took a lot of testing but I found it after pages of errors.

I am hosting from fatcow and the information they provided was a bit confusing.
