Need help on git

I have openstack installed on my CentOS machine. I used devstack to construct a development environment. I am interested in development work and wants to develop features related to ceilometer. All I want is forking out a new ceilometer branch(Icehouse), work on it and commit. Though the long intention is to contribute but as of now I want to work on ceilometer, rebuild devstack and ensure that all the services are running or not.

Can anyone suggest how to go about it?

if you are not familiar with git I suggest you to practice in a test environment and check its features, commands .... To create a branch is a simple command, but using a branch is a bit more, you need to find out a way (a suitable way for your working environment) to handle things efficiently.
