Hi All,
I am new to this forum.I am doing my Linux course(RHEL),
I working as an system administrator in Bangalore,India.
I have a question.
In my company we would like to do a ftp server migration.
to give some details.
we have a server from which we would like to transfer the data and all the ftp user accounts with the existing permission to the RACK server.
what are steps need to followed.
please help.
I am assuming you are using RHEL or similar (e.g. CentOS).
What FTP server software are you using? vsftp?
The server you are moving to, is that a new build or existing build already with user accounts?
Are the user accounts local or centralized (e.g. ldap) ?
By RACK server, do you mean just a racked server or did you mean a clustered server?
If it is a standard vsftp migration to a new server with local account databases, I would say the steps are:
1) build vsftp on new server
2) mirror the config of both vsftp installations by referring to /etc/vsftp.conf
3) copy the user portion of /etc/passwd (I think UID's >500)
4) copy the shadow file and group file entries for the same users (not sure if this is that simple with shadow file entries, I think it is and it would be easy to test beforehand)
5) rsync the ftp data
6) copy over any specific vsftp userlist and/or chroot list files. (these should be identified in vsftp.conf if they are being used)
7) test
8) setup any firewalls/selinux/hardening etc - that is not related to vsftp but should be part of any server build.

vsftp

the server that we are trying to move is from a Tower sever to rack server. In the tower server we have existing user account with files & data in it.
Are the user accounts local or centralized (e.g. ldap) ?
the user accounts are centralized.
By RACK server, do you mean just a racked server or did you mean a clustered server?
No its not a clustered server.it is just a rack server.
