Error after removing External HDD

Dear All,

My server uses OS of Redhat Enterprise Server AS 4 update 4. I put an external HDD in USB port, mount it to /d03 and use normally.
I take out it from server but before I not remove from OS. After I restart server but OS can not start and a notice raises "Repair filesystem". I try command "fsck -s /dev/d03" and "e2fsck -v -y /dev/d03" but can not repair it.
So, how must i to do:
1 - repair filesystem and start OS
2 - reject and unmount device in OS and then take out external HDD

thanks you and best regard

Your USB experiments probably have nothing to do with why the server is not starting up (If I am understanding this right from
what you have typed)

1. Unplug the USB device (some times your machine may be trying to boot from the USB device) and then restart the system
2. if #1 does not work, grab hold of a rescue disk, boot from it and then start checking the root filesystem

You said that OS does not start. What do you mean by umount device in OS ?

You can use "umount" :

# umount /media/mydisk

Make sure that you don't have a shell with the current directory in the external device first.

Hello slimjim!
Is it enough to just use the "umount" before physically unplugging the hdd?
Thanks.

Yep, provided it works (might fail if a process is using the mount).
