Desperate Help - Killed Server

While trying to update our Debian server from 2.4-latest I caused some problems. Although the latest kernel did not install, after the server not responding and having to manually remove power, upon booting up the ethernet card is no longer recognized.

I'm assuming the driver is not loading or module is there a way to determine my next steps?

When I execute /etc/init.d/networking restart

I get

Setting up IP spoofing protection: rp_filter
Reconfiguring network interfaces...ifup: interface lo already configured

eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Bind socket to interface: No such device

When I go /sbin/ifconfig I get

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet address:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

then some packet info, something is severly screwed up.

I tried the gmesg but can't get it to pause to look what going on.

Very confused and worried at this point.

I'm not sure exactly how to do that, this is my first time ever troubleshooting Linux, let alone no GUI. I did however upon researching bring up the syslog and tried to compare earlier in the logs at boot up till now and what I found was something is not being loaded regarding the ethernet card.

Earlier in the day when it was functioning there is a line at the kernel right after the SCSI line that says
e1000: Eth0 NIC Link is up
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver version 5.2.3.0.$
eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection

But that is now missing on resarting. How do I manually add the driver??? Where would it be located?

Thank you for such a quick response.
