Debian how to check/benchmark new hdd?

I've got Debian server on my server, CLI only. I know how to setup the drive for use, but I don't know how to check the smart data or how to benchmark the drive. I remember trying to benchmark a drive once with Linux and it wanted the drive to be unmounted and the benchmark would delete data. Never got that benchmark as the drive I wanted to benchmark was the boot drive and it couldn't be unmounted.

I've got a new hdd and want to make sure its in great shape before I dump a ton of data onto it.

Thanks,
Higgins909

Will try to get my pictures up later. I've put a little bit of data onto it, but it's just a copy in case the drive does fail. Hdtune also said it has 0 on time and both said there was only 1 spin-up or something like that... Gotta get the photos.

Phoronix web site usually performs tests on hardware and other things like filesystems. In those tests they use a number of different types of tests. For example they may write and read at different file sizes and different types of files to get some benchmark. You might look at those tests for their test suite. Your mileage may vary due to the thousands of variables in your system and tests.
