Question Best way to benchmark HDD with Gnome Disk Utility (Disks)?

Hi Linuxers.

What's the best way to benchmark a HDD with Gnome Disk Utility (Disks)? I need to unmount it right? Should I run a Live CD/USB to run Disks?

Thanks.

Question

Should the HDD be blank or does this matter?

I think you'll find more lively discussion of Linux benchmarking on Phoronix.com. I know that's a really indirect answer and I'm sorry
